United Airlines Launches First Direct Flight From US To Christchurch

United Airlines successfully landed its debut direct flight from San Francisco to Christchurch, marking it the first time an American airline has provided non-stop service to New Zealand’s South Island. On Sunday, the United Airlines Dreamliner 787-900 landed at Christchurch International Airport at 10:03 am local time. 

Partnering with Air New Zealand, this new service is set to improve connections between the United States and the South Island, with United Airlines offering three flights per week throughout the summer season using the 787-800 aircraft. This expansion and flight increases will allow more round the world fare availability from New Zealand. 

Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson expressed optimism about the impact of this direct route on the nation’s economy, highlighting the potential for increased tourism. Statistics indicate that American visitors arriving through Christchurch Airport tend to spend 42% more in New Zealand and stay 33% longer. 

United Airlines spokesperson Tim Wallis expressed pride in being the first U.S. airline to offer this direct service, emphasising New Zealand’s status as a bucket list destination for U.S. travellers. The flight not only facilitates access to the natural wonders of the South Island but also streamlines travel for New Zealand’s southern population heading north. 

To celebrate the historic occasion, Christchurch Airport opened ‘Planespotters Park’ a special viewing area for aviation enthusiasts to witness the debut Dreamliner’s arrival and departure.
